The paper deals with a new diagnostic and monitoring system DGS-DMT for continuous casting of steel, which integrates a numerical model of strand solidification with diagnostics and breakout prediction sub-system based on a unique physical analysis of the process. Mould friction characteristics and wall temperatures fluctuations are evaluated by indirect methods for the purpose of identification cracks and breakout prediction. The solution is a real time application of industrial computer with the ability of intranet monitoring and visualisation of the solidification process. The data acquisition and monitoring system enables both process diagnostics and determination of boundary conditions for the integrated numerical model.
