dcterms:description
The presented work deals with the use of blast furnace slag in the production of plain concrete and with its impact on the elements of the environment. The experimental part of this work presents the results of an experimental research dealing with concretes based on finely ground blast furnace slag, where finely ground granulated blast furnace slag with the weight of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 95 and 100 % was used as a substitute of Portland cement. The following properties were observed in all prepared experimental mixtures: consistency of concrete mixture, volume weight of fresh concrete mixture, cube and prism strengths, water tightness, frost resistance and static modulus of elasticity. The final part of this paper is focused on the life cycle assessment of concrete by the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The LCA has been the method of choice for various kinds of new technologies in recent years. The LCA is the generally accepted approach of determining the environmental consequences of a particular product over its entire life cycle. These systematic approaches eventually reveal the true potential of the evaluated product and identify the environmental issues in the production process so that precautionary steps can be suggested to reduce the negative environmental impact. Besides identifying the environmental impact of the product, the LCA identifies also activities that most contribute to this impact. The LCA method may be applied in other areas like comparison of the rival products leading to minimizing of environmental impacts. The aim of the last part of this work is to evaluate and compare total environmental impacts of plain concrete prepared with or without share of blast furnace slag as the cement replacement in terms of threats to soil, water, air and human health in order to select the most suitable alternative.
