This paper deals with the release of gas from closed underground mines. This phenomenon has a very adverse impact on the environment. It mainly affects air pollution; however, it also brings about the possibility of creating an explosive mixture of gas in the vicinity of closed mines. To resolve this issue, different countries in the world use different methods. This article describes the method applied in the Ostrava-Karviná district in the Czech Republic. As a passive form of protection, degasification wells are the most commonly used method. According to the results of measurements made in the course of a few years, it can be proven that using degassing wells leads to the reduction in the concentration of leaking methane. Methods utilizing cogeneration units have also been described. These units can contribute to the utilization of the energy from these gases.
