The transverse magneto-optic (MO) effect is used to design an integrated MO isolator consisting of waveguidestructure based on a tensile-strained quantum well laser. Device isolation ef.ciency is calculated using the Yeh's matrixformalism for anisotropic multilayers. Waveguide losses introduced by absorption of MO metallic .lm are compensatedby optical gain in the quantum-well (QW) lasing structure. The effects of the overlayer and the MO layer thicknesses onthe isolation are optimized.
