Cloned saplings of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L) K a r s t.) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) (7 years old) were exposed to enhanced UV-B irradiation (+25%) continuously over three growing seasons (1999-2001). Selected parameters of variable chlorophyll a fluorescence and pigment composition were analysed in the late summer of the third growing season to evaluate the influence of long-term elevated UV-B irradiation on broadleaf and conifer tree species. To obtain information on the xanthophyll cycle, the de-epoxidation state (DEPS) was calculated. These tree species responded differentially to the long-term effects of enhanced UV-B radiation, Norway spruce was more sensitive compared to the European beech. Sazenice smrku ztepilého a buku lesního (stáří 7 let) byly vystaveny zvýšené dávce UV-záření (+25%) po dobu tří vegetačních sezón (1999-2001). Vybrané parametry variabilní fluorescence chlorofylu a a zastoupení pigmentů byly analyzovány na koci léta třetí růstové sezóny k ocenění vlivu dlouhodobého vystavení zvýšené UV-B radiaci. Tyto rostlinné druhy reagovaly odlišně k dlouhodobému působení zvýšené UV-B radiaci, smrk ztepilý byl více citlivý.
