Species within the Festuca-Lolium complex are agronomically important. The intergeneric hybrids Festuca x Lolium may combine desirable characters of their parents and the Festulolium cultivars are very popular as forage and turf. Due to permissive chromosome pairing, meiosis in such hybrids is regular with high frequency of intergeneric recombination. Parental chromosomes can be readily distinguished in Loliuum – Festuca hybrids by genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). However, GISH has a defined limit of resolution and cannot identify small intergenomic exchanges. To increase the resolution level in tracking intergenomic recombination in Festuloliums, we have developed a DArT (Diversity Array Technology) chip for five important species of the complex (F. pratensis, F. arundinacea, F. glaucescens, L. perenne and L. multiflorum).
