These compact sources that are simple to operate is expected to have an important impact in several disciplines, including surface science, photophysics and photochemistry, and biology. Focusing of these intense soft X-ray beams will open new applications, including nonlinear optics at ultrashort wavelengths, nanomachining, generation of plasmas with soft X-ray photons and lithography. In this work we report on the generation and characterization of a focused soft X-ray laser beam with intensity and energy density that exceed the threshold for the ablation of metals. A spherical Si/Sc multilayer mirror was used to focus soft X-ray Ar8+ laser pulses generated by a 46.9-nm tabletop capillary-discharge-pumped driver.
