The paper deals with a quite new and possibly very important phenomenon appearing in the behavior of polyelectrolytes in a dilute state. The existence of locally collapsed states of a polyelectrolyte chain, leading to its increased local mobility, has been observed and found to be due to a cooperative fluctuation in the counterion density distribution. In contrast to a theoretical prediction, the collapse is dynamic and travels relatively slowly along the polyion chain, the residence time of the fluctuation being 30 - 70ms. The phenomenon could be important e.g. in molecular biology, considering that nucleic acids and some proteins have a polyelectrolyte nature.
