Cooperative interactions of three derivatives of sodium benzenesulfonate with polycations were studied. Different driving forces lead to differently pronounced cooperativity effects (strongest for entropy in poly(styrenesulfonate), medium for hydrophobic interaction energy in dodecylbenzenesulfonate and none in methylbenzenesulfonate). The tendency to cooperative behavior thus depends on a fine balance of thermodynamic factors. The study was done using multinuclear NMR, quantum-chemical calculations and electrostatic Poisson-Boltzmann calculations.
