Despite significant achievments in understanding and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, they are still the most frequent causes for disqualification of pilots. Therefore, many aerospace specialists have been looking for new, more sophisticated methods(particularly non-invasive), for use in developing cardiovascular risk profiles. Spectral analysis of heart rate variability (SAHRV) is one such method. 49 military aviators were evaluated during their annual physicals at our Institute involving anthropometric data, risk factors questionnaire, laboratory screening, exercise test, SAHRV and psychophysiological testing. SAHRV was evaluated by the VariaCardio TF 4 system (SimaMedia,Inc.). Data were analysed using the fast Fourier transformation algorithm. SAHRV in combination with other non-invasive test battery methods can be used to develop a cardiovascular risk profile for pilots, which may help in efforts to predict and prevent cardiovascular disease in pilots.
