When the outer electric field is applied tangentially to the microchannel surface, the Coulomb force acts on generated electric charge and the combination of Coulomb, viscous and pressure forces causes the net flow through the channel. This phenomenon is called direct current (DC) electroosmosis. It was experimentally discovered that velocity of electrokinetic flow depends on the electrolyte concentration. In contrast with this, the traditional theory predicts that the velocity of electrokinetic flow does not depend on electrolyte concentration; it depends only on value of zeta-potential. The value of zeta-potential was experimentally determined from measured velocity by Helmholtz-Smoluchowski approximation. We model the system with Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations. We want to verify that the surface roughness affects the electrokinetic flow and its concentration dependence.
