The effects of an electric field on enzymatic hydrolysis of penicillin G in an electro-membrane reactor with penicillin G acylase entrapped in a polyacrylamide gel membrane were studied. Results of an experimental study revealed remarkable increase (about 50-fold) of reaction rate due to electric current passing through the reactor. Good separation of reaction products from substrate solution was achieved (penetration of substrate into the product stream was negligible). No excessive temperature rise due to the Joule heating was detected in the reactor. The effects of the electric current density and enzyme activity on conversion, effectiveness of separation and reaction temperature were studied in detail.
