Cultivation media prepared from alkali pretreated and enzymatically hydrolysed wheat straw were used for biofuel production. Two fermentation alternatives, SHF (separate hydrolysis and fermentation) and SSF (simultaneous sacharification and fermentation) processes were employed for production of ethanol or 1-butanol. Based on preliminary testing in a small scale, Z. mobilis and C. pasteurianum were chosen for further experiments in a laboratory bioreactor. After 48 h of batch SHF process, ethanol concentration 13 g/l was achieved by Z. mobilis which is equal to 0.46 g/g glucose in raw wheat straw. In case of C. pasteurianum, cultured again for 48 h in SHF mode, all glucose and about 80 % of xylose were utilized and solvents concentrations 5.3 g/l of 1-butanol and 2.9 g/l of acetone were reached.
