We have demonstrated that tetra-O-acetylriboflavin can be used as an efficient sensitizer for photooxidation of various types of sulfides to sulfoxides. Photooxidations performed in alcohols proceed with high rates and quantum yields up to 0.7. Due to the positive effect of water traces on the rate of photooxidation, ethanol (95%) is the most suitable solvent for the photooxidation on preparative scale, as demonstrated on several examples of structurally different sulfides.
