dcterms:description
In this study dissolution of dolomite in nitric acid was observed. This reaction belongs to a group of heterogenous non-catalytic processes. Study of the reaction was carried out in dilute solutions of nitric acid in concentration range 10 - 100 mol.m-3 and temperature range 293 - 333 K. Experiments took place at approximately constant concentration of nitric acid in semibatch isotherm stirring reactor with selected monofraction of dolomite grains (0.4 - 0.5 mm) originated from Vrchlabí area. pH value of solution was measured by pH electrode and it was kept at constant levels during the whole experiment by adding more concentrated nitric acid solution. Gained dependencies show that the reaction course is influenced mainly by temperature and concentration of used batch acid in the range of used reaction conditions. Effect of stirring on reaction course is perceptible at low stirring speed only when all dolomite grains are not suspended yet. Experimental data were interpreted by relations derived from the non-reacted shrinking core model with a power law kinetic equation. There were obtained kinetic parameters such as the apparent activation energy (41 - 49 kJ.mol-1) and apparent reaction order (0.38 - 0.55). From the calculated kinetic parameter values it is possible to conclude that the reaction of dolomite and nitric acid is in transitional area where the chemical reaction on the dolomite surface manifests itself as a dominant effect with minor contribution of transport phenomena. This was also confirmed by mass transfer coefficient calculation from criterial equations. In this study dissolution of dolomite in nitric acid was observed.
