dcterms:description
Oxidised celluloses belong to a very interesting class of cellulose derivatives with unique chemical and physiological properties significantly different from those of unmodified cellulose. The unique properties and recent universal focus on natural material resources put also this group of cellulose derivates to the position of intensive scientific effort and consequently to the attention of industrial companies. There are also new cellulosic materials avaiable, which are possibly to bring about further innovative products. In this chapter, basic principles of cellulose oxidation chemistry are shortly explained with focus on different products of the reactions. Suitability of various cellulose sources for different oxidation processes is discused. Besides chemistry of cellulose oxidation, chemical reactions of oxidised celluloses with other substances are reviewed. Important properties of individual product groups are characterized and consequences with respect to applications are mentioned.
