dcterms:description
Leuzea carthamoides DC. (Compositae) is a medicinal plant of Siberian part of Russia that possesses stimulant and tonic activity. The preparations manufactured from this plant are used in therapeutic practice, food manufacture and animal production in the world and in the Czech Republic as well. The aerial parts of L. carthamoides have been investigated for its antibacterial activity. Coarsely powdered aerial part was successively extracted with dichloromethane by soxhlet extraction. The extract was fractionated on silica gel column chromatography into six fractions (petroleum ether, toluene, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water). Growth inhibition using the broth microdilution test was determinated against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The highest antibacterial activity (MIC 60 mg/ml) exhibited ethyl acetate extract against S. aureus. Generally, the extracts tested were more effective against Gram-positive (MICs varied from 60 mg/m Leuzea carthamoides DC.
