dcterms:description
Czech Republic has 54 % of its forest area covered by Norway spruce (Picea abies (L)., Karsten) stands while in original species composition a main species was European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce occupied only 11 %. The effort of conversion of pure even-aged Norway spruce stands to mixed uneven-aged stands leads to promotion of broadleaved species by preferably natural or/and artificial regeneration. Pure mature spruce stand in the area of Forestry faculty forests is naturally regenerated by beech seedlings and saplings. One mature (120 years old) beech stand is nearby (about 200 m) with single beech trees scattered in closer positions. Research plot in the stand has a shape of rectangle 100 by 20 m which makes an area of 0,2 ha. The position of each tree belonging to upper storey, its height and breast diameter was measured and recorded. Crown projection of upper storey was measured and drowns up as well. The regeneration subplots were sorted out into three types: (i) under close Czech Republic has 54 % of its forest area covered by Norway spruce (Picea abies (L)., Karsten) stands while in original species composition a main species was European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and Norway spruce occupied only 11 %.
