dcterms:description
In the last two decades, chelating agents have been studied extensively in soil remediation procedures, either in situ (soil flushing, chemically-enhanced phytoextraction) or ex situ (soil washing, heap leaching) (Leštan et al., 2008; Evangelou et al., 2007). The chelants most investigated and used include EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetate) and biodegradable EDDS (ethylenediaminedisucciante). The latter was presented as an “environmentally friendlier“ alternative to the often criticized persistent chelant EDTA (Kos and Leštan, 2003; Nowack et al., 2006). The chelating agents are applied to soils in order to extract the contaminating metals (soil washing/flushing) from the soils or to enhance their mobility and uptake by plants (chelant-enhanced phytoextraction). However, the efficiency of the process is still under debate. One of the main drawbacks of the method is the competition of major soil cations (e.g., Al, Ca, Fe, Mn) for the ligand (chelant) wich subsequently reduces the extraction efficiency In the last two decades, chelating agents have been studied extensively in soil remediation procedures, either in situ (soil flushing, chemically-enhanced phytoextraction) or ex situ (soil washing, heap leaching) (Leštan et al., 2008; Evangelou et al., 2007).
