The composition of the diet of large African herbivores has long remained a topic of interest, particularly because the data provide insight into the animals’ physiology and ecology (McNaughton & Georgiadis 1986; Hofmann 1989; Gordon & Illius 1994; Codron et al. 2007) and may play an irreplaceable role in conservation efforts (Knoop & Owen-Smith 2006; Magome et al. 2008). The eland (Taurotragus oryx, Pallas 1766) is one of the model species that has been investigated from a landscape (Fabricius & Mentis 1990) to plant species composition and nutrient content level (Field 1975; Nge’the & Box 1975; Watson & Owen-Smith 2000), unlike the Derby eland (Taurotragus derbianus, Gray 1847), its closest relative (Wilson & Reeder 2005; Rube et al. 2008). The first eland has a large proportion of browse in its diet (Cerling et al. 2003; Sponheimer et al. 2003; Wallington et al. 2007).
