The data obtained from the areas of alpine tree line are valuable for the assessment of climate change and detailed research is also important for the understanding of ecological adaptation of P. pumila as a shrub tree vigorously growing in unfavourable conditions thanks to its attributes. Three locations with different altitudes were selected on the Svatoj Nos peninsula (Baikal Lake) – locality A (1818 metres above sea-level), locality B (1110 metres above sea-level) and locality C (456 metres above sea-level). On the location C, only the growth form of P. pumila was determined. On the locations A and B, the mean linear increment of P. pumila macroblasts in two decades (1987-1996 and 1997-2006), leaf mass density and nitrogen content per leaf area were measured. Anatomical study was carried out on the shoots and on the needles aged one to four years on the localities A and B. We found out, that the needles were longer and narrower on the locality B compared to the locality A.
