dcterms:description
Single and split applications of EDTA were compared for enhancing phytoextraction of heavy metals from soil contaminated by smelting industry using Zea mays in model and field experiments. Split applications caused for a longer time relatively constant levels of water-soluble Pb and a lower maximum solubility of Pb resulting in less phytotoxicity and higher biomass production of Zea mays. Pb contents of Zea mays and thereby total phytoextraction efficiency were higher following single applications. Higher Pb uptake of Zea mays following single applications may have been caused by increased unrestricted uptake of metal chelate complexes due to higher physiological stress for plants.
