Cultivation methods for the quantitative detection of the faecal bacteria are inaccurate and time consuming, also not all bacteria are cultivatable and results obtained may be incorrect. Hence, the aim of our study was to evaluate FISH method for the quantitative detection of different bacterial group in faecal samples of infants, calves, and lambs during the milk-feeding period. Faecal samples from 91 infants, 20 calves, and 18 lambs were tested. A specific fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) kit for Bifidobacterium spp., Clostridium butyricum group, Escherichia coli, and Lactobacillus spp. were used for the quantitative detection of bacteria compared to cultivation methods. Sixty-nine infants possessed high numbers of bifidobacteria in their faeces. Cultivation counts were nonsignificantly lower (9.91 ± 0.67) than counts determinated by FISH (9.92 ± 0.55). Twenty-two infants did not contain detectable bifidobacteria. These infants possessed as a major group of their faecal f Cultivation methods for the quantitative detection of the faecal bacteria are inaccurate and time consuming, also not all bacteria are cultivatable and results obtained may be incorrect.
