Underground biomass is affected by changes in aboveground parts due to either abandonment or management. Defoliation is one of the major factors affecting root biomass amount, beside environmental conditions. In this study we evaluated the effects of green fallowing, mowing, mulching and fertilization on underground biomass production (years 2002 and 2003). Treatments were: green fallowing, once mowing, once mowing + mulching, twice mowing, twice mowing + N fertilization and twice mowing + mulching. The highest root biomass production was under green fallowing and twice mowing + N fertilization treatments (1546 and 1253 g.m-2, respectively) in 2002. The next year, root biomass slightly increased in twice mowing and once mowing + mulching treatments, and it was reduced in other treatments.
