In most studies on the adaptation of insects to low winter temperatures, the temporal sequence of the effects of photoperiod and temperature and their relative importance in cold hardening has been neglected. Analysis of several parameters of cold hardiness in a heteropteran, Pyrrhocoris apterus, revealed that the adaptation proceeds in two phases: (1) physiological signals trigger physiological and biochemical changes that (a) directly increase cold-hardiness and/or (b) are a prerequisite for (2) more robust cold hardening induced by temperature decrease.
