dcterms:description
Bacterioplankton from a eutrophic reservoir was size-fractionated to reduce or enhance protistan grazing then incubated in situ in dialysis bags, and changes in bacterial, protistan, and viral parameters were studied. Shifts in bacterial community composition (BCC) were examined by molecular approaches. Changes in bacterial characteristics were clearly linked with changes in mortality rates. In the reservoir, where bacterial production about equaled protist grazing and viral mortality, community characteristics were nearly invariant. In the grazer-free treatment, subject to a low mortality rate from viral lysis, bacteria increased markedly, and a shift in BCC was detected. In the enhanced grazing treatment, bacterial mortality was 200% of daily production. Bacteria declined, grazing-resistant flocs and filaments dominated, and the most marked shifts in BCC were detected. Viral infection rates were significantly correlated with grazing rates suggesting that protistan grazing may stimulate viral activit Bacterioplankton from a eutrophic reservoir was size-fractionated to reduce or enhance protistan grazing then incubated in situ in dialysis bags, and changes in bacterial, protistan, and viral parameters were studied.
