In this work we applied next generation 454 sequencing to analyse genomes of Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) allotetraploid and its progenitors N. sylvestris and N. tomentosiformis. Using bioinformatic similarity searches we show that the maternal N. sylvestris genome is relatively stable in the tobacco while the paternally derived N. tomentosiformis genome suffered from megased elimination of repeated DNA.
