Using a combination of morphological, life-history and molecular data, we redescribe Sphaerospora ranae (Morelle, 1929) n. comb. (previously Leptotheca ranae) and emend its taxonomic status. Renal infections restricted to 2 Rana spp. suggest narrow host specifity. SSU rDNA based phylogenetic analysis revealed a close relationship of S. ranae with piscine Sphaerospora elegans (type sp. of the genus) and Sphaerospora truttae, forming together with distantly related Leptotheca fugu a Sphaerosporid clade, the basal branch to all myxosporean species. The close relationship of the 3 Sphaerospora spp. is further supported by the presence of 2 areas with extensive nucleotide insertions in the V4 region of the SSU rDNA, morphology and life-history. Spore morphology of Sphaerospora s.l. is very simple and probably represents a primitive morphotype retained in most myxosporean lineages. The genus Sphaerospora is emended using combination of morpological, life-history and molecular features. Pomocí kombinace morfologických, biologických a molekulárních dat byla provedena redeskripce Sphaerospora ranae (Morelle, 1929) n. comb. (dříve Leptotheca ranae) a opraven taxonomický status druhu. Renální infekce omezené na 2 druhy rodu Rana naznačují úzkou hostitelskou specifitu. Fylogenetická analýza pomocí SSU rDNA odhalila blízkou příbuznost S. ranae se Sphaerospora elegans (typový druh rodu) a Sphaerospora truttae z ryb, tvořících spolu se vzdáleně příbuznou Leptotheca fugu tzv. Sphaerosporid clade, představující bazální větev všech myxosporeí. Blízká příbuznost 3 uvedených druhů r. Sphaerospora je dále podpořena přítomností 2 oblastí s extenzivními nukleotidovými inserty ve V4 regionu SSU rDNA, morphologií a biologií. Morfologie spor Sphaerospora s.l., je velice jednoduchá a pravděpodobně reprezentuje primitivní morfotyp zachovaný ve většině fylogenetických linií myxosporeí. Rod Sphaerospora je emendován pomocí kombinace morfologických, biologických a molekulárních znaků.
