The impacts of grass carp grazing upon aquatic macrophytes nd reproduction of phytophilous cyrpinid, the rudd, were determined during the three-year study. Each of the two fishponds was stocked with 30 individuals of 2+, 3+ and 4+ rudd in April 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively. In addition, the experimental fishpond was stocked with 10 individuals of two-year-old grass carp (30 kg/ha) in April 2000. In spring 2001, grass carp biomass attained 90 kg/ha. Grass carp grazing pressure reduced the biomass of the aquatic macrophytes and influenced their species composition. Biomass values decreased from 108.6 g/m2 in 1998 to 24.1 g/m2 in 2000 in the experimental fishpond but did not change in the control fishpond in 1998 and 1999. Selective grazing of grass carp shifted the dominance of Potamogeton pusillus, Eleocharis acicularis and Cladophora globulina in 1998 to Myriophyllum spicatum, Ceratophyllum demersum, Spirogyra sp., Elodea canadensis and Hydrodictyon reticulatum in 1999-2000.
