dcterms:description
Sperm proteins in seminal plasma and spermatozoa have developed adaptations due to the reproductive environment in both teleostean and chondrostean fishes. Analysis of the composition and functions of these proteins presented new insights in sperm motility and fertilizing abilities, thereby creating possibilities to improve artifical reproduction and germplasm resource conservation technologies (e.g. cryopreservation). Seminal plasma proteins involved in protection against proteolytic attack are able to preserve spermatozoa during storage in the reproductive system, whereas all spermatozoa proteins contribute to swimming and fertilising ability of sperm. Compared to mammalian species, few data are available on fish sperm proteins and their functions. The current state of the art is reviewed, and relevant subjects not yet studied are pointed out. Future research should concentrate on protein functions and their mode of action in fish species, especially on the role of spermatozoa surface proteins durin Sperm proteins in seminal plasma and spermatozoa have developed adaptations due to the reproductive environment in both teleostean and chondrostean fishes.
