dcterms:description
The paper aims at clarifying Hume's attitude toward metaphysics. Part (1) addresses an exegetical issue, namely, what Hume meant by the expression 'metaphysics'. The conclusions of this part are: (A) for Hume the word 'metaphysics' means %22any profound reasoning%22, (B) Hume distinguishes good and bad metaphysics, and (C) Hume considers his Science of Human Nature to be the best example of good metaphysics. Part (2) addresses the question of whether Hume was a metaphysician in a more substantial sense. The conclusions are: (A) Hume is not a metaphysician in the Aristotelian and in Rationalist senses, but (B) Hume's philosophical project fulfills the criteria for metaphysics formulated by Gracia in Metaphysics and Its Task.
