The purpose of this paper is twofold: (a) to develop an exact and systematic procedure for automatic tuning of both DTCs and PI(D) controllers which integrates a simple experiment for the process identification and a robust design method for the exac tly defined model set of all transfer functions which are consistent with the a priori form of the lag/dead time transfer function and with the process characteristic numbers obtained from an identification experiment; (b) on the base of the develop ed design procedure, to give the objective performance comparison between PI(D) and DTC and to formulate the clear recommendation when to use DTC.
