dcterms:description
This is a volume two of a book that attempts to present historical summary of the events known as %22Arab Spring%22 together with analysis of their causes and impacts for each particular country. The time that has passed since the events allows us to see many of the recent events in new perspectives and previously unknown contexts. Each of the authors presents his historical account of these events in chapter dedi- cated for each country. This volume (part 2) explores the turmoil in Yemen, Syria, Bahrain as well as other states of Arab Peninsula. Vero- nika Krama?rekova? explores the proces of political and social disin- tegration of Yemen. In the second chapter, Zbyne?k Tarant attempts to offer a brand new perspective on the Bahraini uprising and the notion of %22sectarian conJict%22, which Tarant sees rather as a sort of Mertonian self-fullCling prophecy. In the third chapter, Ivan Ramadan - an author with Syrian origins - attempts to summarize the bitter and multilayered story of Syrian uprising and the resulting civil war, which is a conJict of scale unseen in the Arab world for decades with an unprecedented degree of involvement of foreign actors. Veronika Sobotkova? then offers a quick overview of the protest movements that, inspired by the Arab spring, erupted in other countries of the Arab Peninsula, including Kuwait, Oman and Sau?di Arabia. The book is concluded with a critical reJection on the %22Twitter Revolution%22 debate by Zbyne?k Tarant, who warns the Western readers against overemphasising the role of social networks in the protest as Facebook and Twitter have proven to be faithful servants not only for the protesters, but for the security aparatus of the autocratic regimes as well.
