dcterms:description
Written from the perspective of social history, the paper examines the effect of the post-war council house building projects on the identity of working-class Britons. Special attention is paid to the impact of council estates on the inhabitants' social capital, i.e. benefits derived from community membership. It is argued that while the government-built housing estates were intended to improve the living conditions of the working class, they have had a number of corrosive effects on the social capital of the residents, weakening the traditional community bonds and increasing individualism. In the case well-planned estates, the transformation was towards embourgeoisement and focus on the home and the nuclear family, providing some compensation for the loss of traditional community life. In the case of the ill-designed tower block estates of the fifties and sixties, however, the trend was towards alienation and social exclusion.
