Induction pre-heating of metals nowadays belongs to prospective technologies for their surfacing. Its purpose is to suppress the temperature gradients in the surface layers of heated material irradiated later by a laser beam and avoid arising there subsequent excessive mechanical strains and stresses of the thermal origin. The paper deals with the shape optimization of the considered inductor for this pre-heating. It is solved using the new genetic algorithms and the results are shown on an illustrative example.
