This paper deals with monitoring the popularity of different information sources. A detailed analysis is endeavouring to find a platform from which it is appropriate to address both potential and actual students. On this platform it should then be possible to place an advertising campaign to recruit potential students, or to lend a hand to those students currently in the study programme. Two basic principles of classification were employed in the data analysis. Firstly, cluster analysis was used as the representative of unsupervised classification methods. Secondly, decision trees were used as the representative of supervised classification methods. Friedman's test was applied as a representative test of hypotheses concerning the independence of the monitored variables. The survey results confirmed the growing popularity and importance of internet information resources, but also pointed to the continued popularity and importance of direct teaching and textbooks.
