The orientation of the work addresses the characteristics of the stainless manganese-chromium grades 03Mn18Cr16N and 03Mn18Cr16MoN based on the initial testing made on the austenitic manganese-chromium creep resistant steels. The experimental orientation includes steels modified by nitrogen and molybdenum. The ferrite content was controlled by corresponding to the austenitic ferrite formers ratio. The mechanical properties show that all the experimental heats had higher strengths properties and/or yield point levels than the austenitic CrNi steels with comparable carbon content. Considering the effect of nickel on the susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking ways were sought for eliminating this drawback by replacing nickel by manganese.
