17th International Corrosion Congress Proceedings, Las Vegas: The drop evaporation test (DET) has been applied to five austenitic and duplex stainless steels containing 15-23% chromium and 6-35% nickel, yielding comparative SCC resistance data. This standard test simulates SCC in aqueous chloride media under conditions involving evaporation at elevated temperatures where the metal is also threatened by potential local concentration changes, precipitation of salts, and deposition of corrosion products. Transgranular corrosion cracks and a ductile shearing fracture mechanism were observed. Corrosion pits acted as stress concentrators and initiators of short cracks propagating at high velocity.
