dcterms:description
Restoration projects rarely make an economic assessment of the ecological benefits of restoring ecosystem functions. Distortion of the water cycle, a result of current agricultural practices, has a profound effect on landscape energetics. Understanding the interrelation between energy dissipation, water transport, physical, chemical and biological processes, as explained in the Energy-Transport-Reaction (ETR) concept, provides a sound basis for assessing ecosystem functionality ? and landscape sustainability. Based on the ETR concept, catchment sustainability of the small submontane Stropnice river will be effectively monitored before and after restoration. The restoration of a functioning floodplain (500 ha) is primarily aimed at improving the retention and local cycling of water and matter, enhancing catchment sustainability. A restored high water table which favours CO2 sequestration, is worth ca 650.000 US dollars in 5 years (as per Kyoto agreement).
