dcterms:description
This paper summarizes the current knowledge about isolated northerly populations of Zamenis longissimus in Europe. Despite a number of hypotheses proposed about their origin via human introduction, all evidence suggests that they are relics of the Holocene climatic optimum. Because isolated populations are particularly vulnerable to extinction but may harbour important adaptations to unfavourable conditions, all effort should be made to ensure their survival in the face of the current anthropogenic changes to the environment.
