dcterms:description
This chapter addresses the matter concerned the considerable differences in the ways in which individual nations collected (or did not collect) data on doctoral candidates and graduates. Given the differences in data collection on fundamentally important PhD programs for the rising knowledge economies, it was decided to identify, collect and collate some comparable data on doctoral enrolments and graduations (often called completions) from the authors’ home nations: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, UK and USA. Furthermore, the aim was to obtain data within consistent categories to show and compare any trends across the time-span. It was impossible to obtain data collected against precisely identical categories for each nation as the completion dates are defined differently, they are influenced by the different national and institutional examination procedures and their implementation; there are differences in the categories used for disciplines and other various differences can be found. Consequently, for the purposes of comparison, the authors agreed on some %22hybrid%22 categories (such as for disciplines) and re-ordered data to fit. The chapter presents the data for each nation with some commentary on the national trends and this is followed by the comparisons that can be identified from the national data.
