This paper deals with image compression using higher forms of the wavelet transform (WT). The separable WT can be realised by one-dimensional filters applied on transformed image separately at the horizontal and vertical direction or can be realis ed by integer lifting scheme and then maps integer samples to integer samples and thus can be used to lossless image compression. The transformed data are more suitable for successive entropy coding. One of very efficient coders is the coder based on set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT). Lossy and lossless modifications of the compression algorithm with separable transform can also be combined so the image is coded without any distortion in region of interest (ROI) while the loss y compression is applied outside the region.
