Polymeric particulate composites are frequently used in many engineering applications and they are of great practical importance due to the possibility of modifying mechanical properties and reducing the price/volume ratio of the resulting material. Generally, the addition of rigid particles to a polymer matrix will have an embrittling effect on the composite. Additionally, fillers often do not directly face the matrix molecules in their bulk macro conformations. The matrix molecules near the surface of the fillers may have different properties, appear as a different thermodynamic phase, or even have a different chemical composition. These regions are called interphases.
