Computational modelling of a free radial jet is crucial in numerical investigation of a reinforced exhaust system. The system, namely, makes use of the jet to amplify the suction effect by (a) acting as a virtual flange and (b) entraining the surrounding fluid thus generating a directional flow pattern. The cases studied the influence of boundary conditions imposed on a model (initial jet profile and its time dependence). The flow was considered either compressible or incompressible and LES turbulence model was applied. The initial jet parameters common to all cases were: the width 4 mm, the diameter 200 mm, turbulence intensity level 10 %. A comparison of velocity profiles at various locations obtained by modelling and experiments was performed as well.
