dcterms:description
The present contribution aims to summarize our recent results on geometrical modeling of random heterogeneous materials by Wang tilings. The concept of Wang tilings was originally developed to study mathematical theorem proofs by pattern recognition. It utilizes a small set of Wang tiles, jigsaw puzzle quatrominoes, designed to tile the plane in an aperiodic, geometrically compatible, manner. Wang tiles have been later applied, for example, in physics to modeling of quasicrystals, in computer graphics for texture synthesis and DNA assembly in biology. In all cases, the appealing features of Wang tilings proceed from their ability to create large naturally looking patterns using only a limited number of tiles.
