Většina stavebních materiálů jsou porézní a konstrukce které jsou z nich prováděny přijímají vlhkost, která se do jejich struktury dostává nejen při jejich výrobě, ale zejména v průběhu jejich užívání. S ohledem na destrukční účinky nežádoucí vlhkosti je třeba vlhkost stavebních materiálů sledovat a vhodným způsobem vyjádřit koeficient kapilární vodivosti jako charakteristický parametr pro její transport. na základě zkušeností s elektromagnetickým mikrovlnným zářením při měření vlhkosti byla experimentálně sestavena měřící aparatura, využívající vhodných vlastností tohoto záření v interakci s vodou, obsaženou v pórovité struktuře, ke sledování transportu vlhkosti v inertních porézních hmotách.
