dcterms:description
The statistical length scale, i.e. the spatial measure of variability of material parameters can act as a localization limiter of the failure precess in quasi-brittle materials. This fact has been utilized in the formulation of an adaptive strategy governed by the correct reflection of stress redistribution in the damage zone occuring during the failure process. The usual damage/plasticity framework is used to formulate the extension of the standard time-integration algorithm. The refinement/coarsening strategy is controlled by the relative distance to the failure threshold at each material point. This variable controls both the time- and space- resolution of the discretization. In particular, the formulation renders general criteria for controling the time-step and spatialy defined refinement/coarsening control function (RCCF). The constructed RCCF reflects the variability of arbitrary material paarameters affecting both stiffness and strength.
