The relationship between doseevolume profiles of 3-dimensional conformal radiation therapy (RT) and intensity modulated RT and their toxicity in the treatment of prostate carcinoma was studied. Despite the application of high doses (78-82 Gy) with intensity modulated RT, it affects a smaller volume of rectum in low and intermediate doses than does 3-dimensional conformal RT and causes less severe gastrointestinal toxicity. We showed that total area under the doseevolume profiles and doseevolume cutoff points has significant and techniquespecific predictive potential toward the toxicity of RT.
