The purpose of the paper is brief characteristic of building and implementing the Balanced Scorecard approach to the public sector. Rostoucí důraz na kvalitu a efektivitu nutí městské úřady uplatňovat inovativní a kreativní manažerské metody, které se již osvědčily ve sféře soukromé. Rámec nazývaný %22Balanced Scorecard%22 představuje nový model strategického řízení, který umožňuje organizacím vyjasnění vize a strategie a jejich snadnější realizaci. Na základě velkého úspěchu v soukromém sektoru metoda rychle pronikla i do veřejné správy. Hlavním cílem tohoto příspěvku je krátká charakteristika tvorby a implementace metody BSC ve veřejném sektoru. Pozornost je také věnována hlavním příčinám neúspěchu při implementaci této metody.
