dcterms:description
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important regulators of gene expression that control both physiological and pathological processes such as development and cancer. Research during the past decade has identified major factors participating in miRNA biogenesis and has established basic principles of miRNA function. Recent studies, however, have introduced a paradigm shift in our understanding of the miRNA biogenesis pathway, which was previously believed to be universal to all miRNAs. It has become apparent that miRNA regulators themselves are subject to sophisticated control, which takes place at the levels of both miRNA metabolism and function. In this chapter we focus on the recent advances in knowledge of the miRNA biogenesis pathways and regulatory mechanisms involved in miRNA gene transcription, processing, maturation and functionality. Potential impact of the alterations in miRNA biogenesis pathways on cancer pathogenesis is discussed.
